Whats the best genealogy webiste?

Myesha Zerbe: The important thing about a genealogy website is records they have not necessarily family trees.Family trees on ANY website, whether free or not free, are subscriber submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented. Anyone who takes it for granted if they have found some of their family members in an online family tree that it is accurate. are fools. You frequently will see different info on the same people from different subscribers. Then you will see the absolute same info on the same people from different subscribers, but that is not proof it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying.Documentation is the meat of genealogy whether you see it online or in a published book. The best for the total records online is not free, but your public library might have a subscription to it. That is Ancestry.Com. They have all the U.S. censuses through 1930. The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet. They have U.K. censuses through 1! 940. They have immigration, military, land and other records. They have ihdexes to vital records(birth, marriage and death) of many U.S. states. They have transcribed the records but you can view the original images. There are errors in their transcriptions, particularly the censuses. When you look at the original, you can have sympathy with the transcribers. Some pages are very faint and some it looks like the census taker had a leaky fountain pen. Also, handwritings can be hard to read. There is an ad for Ancestry.Com running on TV. The person in the ad is happy to find her grandfather's World War I draft record and that is a good original source record, but when she goes on about finding her family in a family tree, she is a fool if she hasn't verified it with documentation. Don't expect to find living people in family trees on any website as that is considered an invasion of privacy and can lead to identity theft. Also, the only way any of your family will be in an o! nline family tree is if someone, perhaps a distant cousin you ! don't even know or someone that has married into your family, has researched and put it online. You can expect there will be errors. Genealogy is not just a matter of putting a name in online and up jumps your family tree, complete and accurate....Show more
