A question for preschool teachers?

Sibyl Siwik: The pay is crap. You live cheaply, not well. You don't become a preschool teacher for the money I live in CA and make $10 an hour at a private center Working for the school district you might make a bit more but not much

Carolynn Testani: The pay scale varies greatly depending on the school, but on average the starting pre-school salary is about 2/3's less than the average grade school teacher starting salary, at least in my area (Chicago Suburbs). I remember a referendum on the local ballot several years back. The grade school teachers were looking for a raise to bring their salaries in line with the average high school teacher salary. The RAISE they were looking for was double what I was making at the time, with a 4 year college degree, and lead teacher position for over 5 years. You don't go into pre-school for the money, you do it because you love children, or because of social conscience. Good luck!...Show more

Zelma Casebier: I was just rec! ently hired as a Pre-K teacher and I will be getting paid $18 p/h. Honestly, when you decide to join the education field, it is not for the money. Also, when you go into daycares and private schools, you will be making about what I will and sometimes even less. If money dominates your passion for education, than you should reconsider profession.

Bud Espenshade: I would not recommend becoming a Preschool teacher if economics is a consideration. The pay is way lower that an elementary / primary school teacher, and it requires just as much effort, if not more. On the other hand, if it's your passion, and you don't mind a low salary, then go for it.
