Jesse Japak: The only way I would consider buying a hybrid is if it were designed to run on WVO. Not petrodiesel or biodiesel but straight veggie. And only if it used nickel free non Chinese batteries
Dexter Gold: you car would be less efficient than a regular gasoline engine car because the production of H2 is the lowest efficiency system on the face of the earth. You can't get enough solar panels on a car to run your leather seat heaters or a 300 watt stereo. If you select WVO, where will you fill up, there isn't enough waste veggie oil in the world to run more than 1% of all the vehicles out there.Instead of dreaming about this stuff, spend your time learning about how thermo engines work and the application of the 1st through 3rd laws of thermo. Once you master those, you will be ready to join others in making REAL things....Show more
Minh Lefrancois: I would like to build a smoke powered vehicle. Mother earth News built one in the 70's and drove it acro! ss the country on scrap wood that it got for free at constuctions sites.Or I would like to build a coal gas generator{acetylene] to power a small pickup. The germans had them at the end of WWII and so did the japanese. The japanese even had motorcycles with coal gas engines.
Heidi Creselious: I'd use something like the Sandia Labs CR5 reactor to make hydrogen and carbon monoxide from CO2 and H2O with solar power. Once you have both hydrogen and carbon monoxide, it's just a matter of keeping them at the right pressure and temperature to synthesize whatever length hydrocarbon you want so you can have gasoline or diesel which has a lot more energy density then compressed hydrogen and doesn't have the storage problems of hydrogen.Keep in mind that the Sandia Labs research was initially to find a more efficient way to make hydrogen from water to use in the manner that you've proposed but their conclusion was that you were better off synthesizing liquid hydrocarbons the! n with just producing hydrogen, thereby avoiding the carbon fo! otprint of constructing a new infrastructure and manufacturing new vehicles.Hydrogen gas also has a very high RON rating but an abysmally low MON rating so when used in an Otto cycle internal combustion engine, it can only run well without a load so I hope you aren't planning on driving anywhere as you'll only be able to idle the hydrogen combustion engine without a complicated and unreliable variable displacement engine. If you do use hydrogen despite it's problems as a vehicle fuel, use a PEM fuel cell and an electric motor.Note, hydrogen and carbon monoxide gases can also be obtained from gasification/pyrolysis of biomass. The byproduct would be charcoal which when used as a biochar soil amendment sequesters the carbon in a stable bio-unavailable fashion that promotes beneficial microbial growth. Synthetic fuels made this way would be carbon negative so those gas guzzlers would then be removing CO2 from the atmosphere, something that your hydrogen car would not be ! doing. Also note that a mixture of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide was what those wood smoke cars used during the war. It's been called wood gas, coal gas, town gas and finally syn gas. The latter name to indicate it's usefulness in synthesizing hydrocarbons....Show more
